The Convair YF-106A 56-0451 Delta Dart 26 Dec 1956 at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) Edwards AFB CA on its first flight. Convair chief test pilot Richard L. “Dick” Johnson later took the delta-winged interceptor to Mach 1.9 at 57,000 ft. This aircraft was the prototype provided by Convair as per the 18 April 1956 Air Force finalized F-102B production contract with Convair. It was the only aircraft to carry the 'YF'-106 MDS designation as well as the FC buzz code for being an F-102B.

From the Convair newsletter "Convairety' Wed 9 Jan 1957, Vol. 10 No. 1:
Johnson, Convair chief engineering test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base, rolled the delta wing interceptor onto the long east-west runway at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) shortly after 2:40 p.p.. Without afterburner, he cleared the runways at 2:50 p.m. and picked up his "convoy". The convoy consisted of a TF-102A and T-33. The T-33 contained Bill Carter, Convair San Diego movie photographer.
