Det 1 78 Fighter Wing (84th FIS) Fresno Municipal Airport. Detachment 1 of the 78th Fighter Wing was at the Fresno Municipal Airport. The 78th Fighter Wing consisted of several Fighter Interceptor Squadrons to include the 82n, 83d and 84th, the 84th the only unit flying F-106's. Although the Det 1 was called/named the "78th Fighter Wing Detachment 1" it appears during the time of these photos (1968-69) it was the 84th and their F-106's is what sat alert at the Det 1. This was the entire flight line. It was only about 100 yards from the SP barracks. The taxiways and runways were part of the Fresno Airport so routinely had civilian aircraft taxi within 100 yards of these alert birds. There was room for no more than three F-106's at a time and normally only had two on alert. The weapons storage area, where all the Nuclear Rocket were stored and maintained, was about 1800 feet down the civilian taxiway and not contiguous to the flight line area.
