Alert Scramble, 1972. A pilot and his crew chief head to a Convair F-106 of the 84th FIS in the alert hangars north of the Hamilton AFB CA runway for a scramble drill. Alert duty at Hamilton in the early 1970s was handled by the 84th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, Hamilton’s last active Air Force unit. By September 1973, the 84th FIS would leave for Castle AFB, Atwater County, CA, thereby taking Hamilton out of active status and putting it into a reserve capacity.
