Photo by Bill Kinsey via Tobin Fuller. Apparently the pilot aborted the takeoff, and as a result the nose gear collapsed. The aircraft's nose then slid UNDER the arresting cable which traveled OVER the aircraft fuselage, slicing off a section of the spine just aft of the air refueling receptacle back, and into the base of the vertical stabilizer before the aircraft stopped. Per Steve Hann this happened in late May, 1982. Steve indicated damage to the underside consisted of a flat spot on the radome, the nose gear door, and strut. He was involved in the repair using -- among other things -- parts from a cann bird as the replacement, "backbone panels" were not drilled for screws. They were able to get her ready for William Tell 82, "by the skin of our teeth", and she arrived at Tyndall only one day late. The aircraft was subsequently transferred to the 49th FIS. This acft was coming back and its nose gear would not extend. I did not witness the landing because there were enough supervisors out there. I was told that he was delaying landing as they tried to figure out how to get the gear to extend. Also I was told they were discussing whether the pilot should have the canopy open or closed. (Not sure if this was in the discussion, just what I was told) Eventually left it closed and landed and finally stopped when the pitot tube went under the cable which traveled down the backbone inbedding itself in the V Stab bringing the acft to an abrupt halt. Acft was hanger queen and used for part for a long time when all of a sudden they wanted it fixed driving the crew chief close to tears each day wanting to know why it was not being fixed.
