F-106A 56-0460 shown here at Holloman AFB in the late 1950's with a few of the Six modifications, some mods made to the early test-to-tactical aircraft while most incorporated on the production line at Lindbergh Field, San Diego. Early on, the F-106 had exhibited acceleration problems and performance problems during testing. Aerodynamicists redesigned the air intake inlets, refitted notched fenceless wings, and adopted the higher thrust Pratt & Whitney J-75-P-17. These changes allowed a much better performance for the aircraft. Also what can be seen in this photo are small camera pods attached to underwing pylons for photographing armament launches. Notice the speed brakes are open in this photograph.
