F-106A 57-2473 of the 101st FIS Otis ANG, MA intercepts a Soviet Tu-95 Bear D bomber off the coast of Cape Cod on 22 September 1981. [U.S. Defense Imagery photo VIRIN: DF-ST-83-01359 USAF]

From Pilot Paul Worcester, Col (Ret) 21 May 2015: The second intercept captured in that news story snipet was again Ray Magill Jr. and me and was on April 9th, 1982. We didn’t get pictures on that intercept which is why they used my previous one taken in September. Different door numbers on the Bears as I recall. However, a week later with another wingman, we intercepted those same two Bears again off the Cape Cod coast. The black and white photos on this webpage of tail number 494 were from this second April intercept (April 15th) and this time, were of me taken by wingman Art Bugbee. There’s more to that story that I reserve for face-to-face meetings. That gave me for the time being the high timer award for most Bear intercepts by the same pilot – three pairs. -- Paul Worcester, Col (Ret)
