1st Lt. Dave Brownwood with his first 1961 squadron flight in F-106A 59-0146. Courtesy of Dave Brownwood who was a pilot with the 456th F.I.S., flying both the F-102 & the F-106, and serving under three different squadron commanders, Lt. Col. William (Red) Miller, Lt. Col. Roy Tweedie, and Lt. Col. James L. Price, during his tenure with the squadron from 1958 to 1961.

If you take a close look at the squadron patch on their uniforms you will see that it is the original 1944 design of Luther. Which raises the questions why was it changed, who changed it, and when was it changed to the later version? Another interesting question that arises is that since The Air Force, and squadron archives at the Air Force Historical Research Center at Maxwell A.F.B. only contain the original 1944 design, application, and approval. Was the the later design ever officially approved by the Air Force? Anyone who might have any information about this would you please contact us.
