F-106's fly with a Mig-17 during Groom Lake projects in 1968. In 1968 the Foreign Technology Division of Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) conducted evaluations at Groom Lake called 'Have Doughnut' and 'Have Drill/Have Ferry' to evaluate the effectiveness of existing tactical maneuvers by USAF and USN combat aircraft against the MiG-21 Fishbed (Have Doughnut') and Mig-17 (Have Drill/Have Ferry). A direct result of this evaluation was a recommendation from ADC to “expedite fitting the internal gun (Vulcan M61A1 20MM Gun), redesigned canopy, radar warning and ECM equipment into the F-106”. F-106 flew 13 missions during Have Drill/Have Ferry Tactical Evaluations at Groom Lake in 1968. Read more at Have Drill/Have Ferry Tactical Evaluation. [Some info from Thornton D.
